Letter: Don’t lose out in your local elections – register to vote

Jean sent this letter to local and regional newspapers in London this week, urging people to register to vote in the local elections on May 6. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, April 20.

Don't miss out in your local elections – register to vote

The general elections are not the only elections taking place on May 6, your local elections are also being held on that day – are you ready to have your say?

One in five Londoners, that's over 1 million people, who are eligible to vote may not register in time. If you're one of those people, you could miss your chance to choose who represents you on your local council.

Politics does not start and end in Westminster. Local councils have a say on everything from how your schools are run and social services are managed, to maintaining your parks and collecting your rubbish. And you have a say who sits on those councils, but only if you are registered to vote.

All UK and EU citizens living in London are eligible to vote in the local elections, but you must be registered on the electoral role. The deadline for registering is Tuesday, April 20. For advice and information visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or call 020 7271 0500.

You need to vote to have a voice – make sure nothing stops you!

Regards,

Jean Lambert MEP
Green Party Member of the European Parliament for London
