Jean Lambert London's Green MEP

Statement: Save Shaker Aamer Campaign demonstration

Jean Lambert has issued a statement in support of a demonstration organised by the Save Shaker Aamer Campaign in Parliament Square to coincide with the State Opening of Parliament today.

As Green MEP for London, Jean is a representative of Shaker, a Battersea resident, in the European Parliament. Unfortunately, Jean is unable to attend the demonstration because she is currently leading a delegation in Nepal, but she said in the statement:

“Despite eight long years of tireless campaigning, strenuous efforts and appeals to common sense and decency, Shaker Aamer, a legal British resident, still remains a prisoner of Guantanamo Bay, held without charge or trial.

“I appeal to this new coalition government to do all that is within their power to bring Shaker, the last remaining British detainee in Guantanamo, home to London, where he belongs with his wife and children. I also repeat my calls for the closure of the festering wound that is Guantanamo and the need to restore rule of law based on respect for human rights.”
