Green MEP joins anti-suicide campaigners at notorious north London bridge

No More Suicide Bridge sign

LONDON’S Green Party MEP Jean Lambert has called for suicide prevention measures to be taken at a Highgate landmark dubbed ‘suicide bridge’.

Ms Lambert joined some 60 campaigners, family members of those remembered, and Green Party Leader Natalie Bennett, at Hornsey Lane Bridge on Archway Road this weekend in a vigil to remember all the victims of suicide at the bridge, including three men in just three weeks in 2010 and another just last month.

Ms Lambert said: “Wherever preventative measures have been taken suicides have decreased – often the potential victims reconsider their actions and often seek help.

“Haringey Council must raise the height of the fences – and quickly: before another death devastates this community.

“While such measures are important, we also need to be providing wider mental healthcare and other support measures.”

More than 800 people have signed a petition calling for immediate action to prevent any further suicides at the spot – which is close to homes and a school.
