Letter urging EU to press for Kamal Foroughi’s release from prison

07.04.2016

UK Green MEPs today sent a letter to Commissioner Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, urging her to press the Iranian authorities to release Kamal Foroughi, a 76-year-old British-Iranian dual national currently detained in Tehran.

You can read the full text of the letter below.

Dear Commissioner,

Re. Kamal Foroughi

Many of our constituents in the UK have written to us about the above-named British-Iranian dual national, currently serving an eight-year prison sentence in Tehran.

According to Amnesty International (MDE 13/3342/2016), Mr Foroughi was arrested in Tehran in May 2011 and held for some time in solitary confinement before being sentenced in 2013 to eight years in prison on charges of ‘espionage’ and ‘possession of alcoholic beverages’. He is now 76 years old and suffering from a number of health problems, for which he does not appear to be receiving adequate medical treatment. He has also been denied proper access to his lawyer.

The facts of this case raise serious concerns and we would very much appreciate you pressing the Iranian authorities to release Mr Foroughi immediately on humanitarian grounds.

Thank you for your kind consideration of this matter; we look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Jean Lambert MEP
