On 5 May, the Government released its highly-anticipated new air quality proposals.
Jean Lambert, London’s Green MEP, wrote to the Evening Standard in response:
“Having been a member of the European Parliament for almost two decades, I have seen successive UK governments fail to meet the EU’s emissions targets. This has led directly to the public health emergency we are experiencing today, whereby children’s lung capacity is adversely affected and 9,000 people die prematurely each year as a result of breathing our filthy air.
The Conservative Party’s new air quality proposals — published reluctantly on Friday after inaction was deemed illegal — shows that it has once again chosen to prioritise electoral gains over voters’ health.
It is time to stop the political pleasantries and begin treating this toxic air crisis with the severity it is due. For Londoners, it is a matter of life and death.”
