This morning a devastating fire ripped through a tower block in West London, leaving at least six people dead and destroying more than 100 homes [1].

Jean Lambert, London’s Green MEP, responded to this tragedy:

“My thoughts are with those affected by the terrible fire at Grenfell Tower in West London today. It’s devastating to hear that people have lost their lives in this tragedy. We should all be able to go to sleep at night in the knowledge that our homes are structurally safe, with clear guidance on how to escape in case of an emergency.

It’s imperative that fire safety is high on the agenda. Given residents’ repeated warnings of the risks, I echo Green Party London Assembly member Sian Berry’s call for an inquiry into how this catastrophe could have occurred. I’m enormously grateful to our emergency services who have once again put their lives on the line to protect members of the public, and the heroic individuals and community organisations stepping in to help those whose lives have been touched by this devastating incident.”
