Jean welcomes High Court's decision to declare Carriers Liability illegal

6th December 2001

Train companies and road hauliers were fined £2,000 for each asylum seeker found aboard. But the Court says the fines are wrong.

Jean Lambert MEP said: "We welcome the High Court's decision. Carriers Liability is a measure we have always opposed. It represented an outsourcing of the immigration service, with an attempt to shift responsibility to others.

Presumably, the Chamber of Commerce and Eurostar can now also claim money back from the UK Government for the massive security expenses they have incurred whilst trying to implement a policy that is now invalid.

It shows there is no substite for a genuine asylum policy. People seeking asylum have a right to come to the UK freely and make their case to the authorities."
