GREEN MEPS REJECT 'PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS OF SPIN'

GREEN MEPs Jean Lambert and Caroline Lucas launch a 'half-term' report to voters on Thursday.

Their annual report rejects the presidential politics of spin and gives voters a chance to see how supporting the Greens at the European Parliament has made a difference.

"The Green Party is committed to accountable and transparent politics," said Dr Lucas, MEP for South East England.

"This report sets us apart from the spin doctoring approach of other parties. We want to tell voters exactly what we're doing, how we're doing it and why, to show how we work at the European level to ensure the Green voice is heard in the corridors of power in Brussels and Strasbourg."

London MEP Jean Lambert agreed: "As the Blair government finds itself increasingly isolated from voters, employers and the rest of Europe, the Greens are working ever harder to bring a sustainable, humane and common sense approach to the issues that matter most to people - asylum and immigration, traffic and transport, urban planning, citizenship and human
rights."

The report contains details of the two MEPs' work over the past year, both at the European Parliament and with constituents in London and the South East.

The Greens are the fifth largest political group in the European Parliament and the two UK Green MEPs play an increasingly significant role in the parliament's work.

Jean was elected Vice-President of the Green/EFA Group in January, and continues to serve on the parliament's Employment and Social Affairs, Petitions and Civil Liberties Committees. She is group spokesman on asylum and immigration issues and a member of working groups on Peace, Antiracism and Trade Unions.

Dr Lucas is the Vice-President of the European Parliament's Committee of Inquiry into last year's Foot and Mouth epidemic, and a member of committees on both Trade, Industry and Energy and Regional Policy and Transport. She is Vice-President of the parliament's working group on Animal Welfare and a member of the Peace and Consumer groups.
