Legislation
In November 2001 Parliament voted to strengthen action concerning live animal transport – a decision welcomed by Jean.
“We know that current legislation is not being properly implemented and that there is still trmendous suffering for animals being transported over long distances without adequate care. I welcome the proposal that the Commsion should develop a policy plan to look seriously at regionalising the production chain.”
Jean Lambert, Green MEP speaking after the vote.
The report to Parliament demanded that transport times were limited to a maximum of eight hours or 500km and the support of local or mobile abattoirs so that animals do not need to be transported for miles, thus risking the spread of disease as well as causing additional suffering.
It also demanded that member states enforce the legislation, exchange information and intriduce stricter penalties for those contravening regulations.
“It will still take a lot of pressure and monitoring from the public to get results. Parliament will also be demanding progress. It’s time this barbaric treatment was stopped.”
Jean Lambert, Green MEP
