Issues

Gender

As a Green Member of The European Parliament Jean works to ensure that both genders have equal opportunities in all aspects of society.

Why is equal representation important?
Discrimination in the workplace

Why is equal representation of women so important?
Firstly, I see it as an issue of the legitimacy of the institutions we have. People should see themselves represented in those institutions in order to feel some sense of connection with them and to have trust in them. Secondly, it demonstrates the openness of those institutions to a range of people, so that they do not seem to be blocks that exclude us. Thirdly, the fair representation of women also widens the base of experience on which those institutions can draw when they make decisions affecting our lives.

Discrimination in the work place
Jean submitted a written question to the Commission regarding sexual discrimination in the workplace. The Commission was asked if existing legislation puts the onus upon the employee to defend their sexual orientation in tribunal, rather than upon the employer to defend their decision not to employ on the basis of sexual orientation.

Events and Activities

Jean has attended and spoken at a number of events which highlight the scandalous continuation of violence against women. Jean heard from victims of attempted rape and has taken up the need to address the way that we treat the victims of these crimes. It is hoped that legislation will be amended to support basic standards for victims of crime against women.

Elevate
Elevate has helped over 220 women from across London through training in management and leadership with the ultimate aim of promoting gender equality in the workplace. This led to the achievement of 100 units towards National Vocational qualifications units at Level 3 or 4. Support available also included one-to-one or group coaching.

The initiative was particularly successful in reaching out to women from ethnic minorities (69% of participants) and those working for the community and voluntary sector. Additionally, it also included 4 networking events on sustainable development which helped to raise awareness of green issues.

Jean has supported the organisation and spoke at the 2 year celebration.

"Elevate has provided an extremely valuable and positive project in really aiming to meet the needs of women in management. This has fulfilled a need in society and also looked at innovative practice including the environmental dimension, which in my view is essential to any well run organisation. The results and success of the project speaks volumes about women's ability to lead in the work place. "

Global women make poverty history

Jean joined women from around the world to launch a conference in Greenwich to take a step closer to Making Poverty History.  Organised as part of International Women's Month, the event brought together women activists to mobilise and raise awareness of how poverty is created, its local and global impacts and how best it can be eradicated to enhance gender equality.

As a Green MEP Jean Lambert's work throughout Europe has impacted on the progress made towards equality and gender empowerment.

"So many women here today who have made extraordinary efforts to Make Poverty History and we must celebrate the progress made so far. Together women involved on a local, national and international scale, all pushing for the eradication of poverty will make a difference."

Capital Woman
Women across London found true inspiration when the Capital Women conference 2006 took place with Jean encouraging women everywhere to use their power in the home, workplace and society to really make a difference to the future.

"London faces many environmental threats including air pollution, traffic congestion and food quality. Climate change however is the most dominant that we must address immediately. We need to 'climate proof' our policy and make sure we have a coherent approach. Women everywhere will be instrumental in changes that need to be made.”
