Green MEP joins youth groups for Tate Modern forum
Jean Lambert MEP will join youth groups from communities across London to discuss the impact of major global issues on young people in an event at the Tate Modern this Friday [24 July].
'Together as one', which has been organised by the Latin American Youth Organisation, aims to create a forum for hard-to-reach youth groups to discuss issues which are of concern to their communities or which affect their opportunities. It hopes to be able to gather information and raise their concerns to the local authorities.
Issues up for discussion include global corruption and its impact on young people's futures, undocumented young migrants, university fees, and the impact of anti-terrorism law on hard-to-reach communities. It will also look at how to engage youth groups from these communities.
About 150 people are expected to attend, with youth groups from London's Latin American, Irish Traveller, Bolivian and Somalian communities among those taking part.
Speaking ahead of the event, Jean Lambert MEP said:
"The Latin American Youth Forum has done a tremendous job in bringing together young people from London's diverse communities, and it's a real honour to be invited to join them. It's great to see an event which looks at major global challenges - like corruption, migration, and security - in terms of their effect on young people, and which seeks to engage their opinions and experiences. As policymakers at local, national and European level we need to take the views of young people into account, so that their perspectives can help shape and drive forward our responses to these issues."
'Together as one' takes place this Thursday and Friday, 23 and 24 July 2009, at the Tate Modern, Bankside, London. Jean Lambert MEP will join an open forum with other local authorities on Friday afternoon, to consider the issues raised by the young people taking part.
